My last sailboat had a 70hp diesel and it hull speed was eight knots. It's not such a good idea for a driftboat in shallow water, prop damage!

The water intake is at very the bottom of the skeg below the prop, so as long as prop is in the water the engine should be pumping just fine. You can run a long shaft outboard on a 15 inch transom but it can cause problems. Grouse.
